Luxury is Allowed!

When living a frugal life it is sometimes hard to balance the financial, ethical and practical needs of our family. It’s really important not to get so obsessed with every penny that you stop enjoying things… there is a fine tuning to be done so that you can still, on occasion, have a luxurious item or treat and feel good about it. Over time we have found that such luxury doesn’t actually come at that high a price – the things we really enjoy are not expensive items in the grand scheme of things.  When you begin sorting all your costs, and what you consider essentials and treats it can be quite revealing to see what people value. If you have more expensive tastes, you just have to save longer for them – don’t deny yourself ever having something you really value or life will become dreary very quickly and the benefits of being frugal will become resentments…

When we think about a treat it’s usually having some quality time together, or a trip out to something we consider expensive like the theatre. But there are also lots of smaller items (under £5) we enjoy like the odd LUSH bath bomb (usually received as a gift), meeting up with a friend for a cuppa, and more recently we’ve discovered these delicious hot chocolate coins! The are produced by Pip, and as they are from Wales they get Mr F’s vote! You can buy all sorts of exciting flavours, and they have lots of vegan, dairy and gluten free options too. We are working our way through them, but the Fiery one defeated us…

On a cold winters night when the kids are (finally) asleep, all our chores for the day are done and we can sit and drink a fancy hot chocolate is a real treat. Long may the Winter last!
